What warranty covers a dental implant placed in Portugal?

In short

The Instituto AreLuna reports implants under warranty, with an expected durability of more than 20 years. That is a life expectancy put forward by the establishment: neither a contractual period nor a statement about any particular mouth. What the warranty covers, for how long and what suspends it is asked in writing before the surgery — with, for someone living in Switzerland, one more line to have included: who bears the cost of the trip if a return is needed.

§ 01

Three things carry the same name

The word warranty is used for three things that should not be confused. The manufacturer's warranty concerns the part, the implant, and is given by system and by reference. The practice's undertaking concerns the work carried out. And the expected durability of a material is neither: it is an estimate, useful for comparing, which creates an obligation for nobody.

Whoever asks the question normally wants to know about the second. But the second sense points to a document: it exists on paper, with its terms, or it does not exist.

What is published is limited to this: implants under warranty and an expected durability of more than 20 years. What is not published is precisely the essential: the period for each component, among implant, abutment, crown and prosthesis, what each covers, who bears which cost, and in what circumstances the warranty ceases to apply. These terms will not be invented here. This page says only that they are asked for in writing and read before signing.

§ 02

The line that counts when you live far away

This is where the question changes in nature for anyone living in French-speaking Switzerland. The cost of the procedure is one thing; the journey and stay of someone living at the other end of the continent are another. A procedure redone without a fee, but which means taking another flight and booking days off, is not costless for that.

And nothing cushions that journey: basic insurance does not cover dental care in practice, and the trip falls under no cover on that side. The question ‘who bears what if a return is needed’ is therefore not a drafting detail: it is the line that decides what the warranty is really worth, from Geneva or from Valais.

It is raised beforehand, in writing, together with the quote. Raising it costs a few written lines; discovering it afterwards costs considerably more.

§ 03

What a warranty document must say

For how long it applies and from what date it is counted. On which components. The object of the cover — the part, the work, or both — and the list of what is excluded. What obligations remain on the patient's side, maintenance appointments and hygiene included, and what happens if they are not kept.

The document must also say who signs it and in what capacity, and a copy must stay with the patient, signed and dated. An undertaking that lives only in messages exchanged when the date was fixed is hard to defend years later.

The useful reading is not that of the number of years: it is that of the list of exclusions. That is where one sees what is really covered. And, as with the rest, what holds for the case of whoever is reading depends on a prior individual assessment and diagnosis.

§ 04

What a warranty is never

A warranty never promises that the treatment will go well. It commits on what happens in circumstances that the document itself delimits. No clinic can promise a clinical outcome, and anyone who wrote one would be committing to what they do not control.

A warranty presented as though it covered whatever the treatment produces is, in health advertising, precisely what cannot be said. It is worth reading with that filter everything that is promised before there is a diagnosis.

§ 05

Frequently asked questions

Is twenty years the length of the warranty?

No. Twenty years corresponds to the expected durability stated for the implants. The warranty period is contractual and must appear on the document handed over by the practice.

Is the manufacturer's warranty enough?

It concerns the part, under the conditions set by the manufacturer, and is identified by system and by reference. The work carried out is another subject and another document.

And the journey, if a return to Porto is needed?

That is the question to have settled in writing before the surgery. No published source says what is planned on this point, and this page invents nothing: it says only that the answer must be in the document, not in the memory of a conversation.

When is the document requested?

At the time of the detailed quote, and therefore before the surgery. Once the treatment is finished, what has not been put on paper will not be.
